A pedigree chart is a method of displaying data about inherited traits within a family or multiple families that are connected by marriage.
How to analyze pedigree charts (pedigree analysis):
A circle represents a female and a square represents a male. Usually, the symbol for an organism with a specific trait is shaded.
A horizontal line connects two organisms that have mated. From this line, there is a vertical line connecting to the offspring. If there are two diagonal lines instead, the offspring are identical twins.
A smaller circle or square represents an organism that died in infancy.
Pedigree charts can also be used to model x-linked traits, where the male only passes down one gene, instead of two.
